Summary:                             With minimum supervision, responsible for servicing and maintaining customer accounts.  Must order products for customers on a daily basis.  Is responsible for keeping track of the daily load, loading and unloading the route truck.  Timely delivery of a variety of bakery products to customers.  Responsible for collecting all monies from weekly and cash accounts (sometimes monthly).

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

 

 

I.          Work Schedule:

 

Attend regularly and on time to a workweek that generally consists of five to six days.  Workdays begin between the hours of 1:00 A.M. and 5:00 A.M. and generally last ten to eleven hours.  Workweek includes weekends and holidays, generally excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas. 

 

 

II.         Physical, Mental and Visual Requirements

 

1.         Must be capable of exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to handle supplies and bulk items; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or 5 pounds or less constantly to drive, load, unload and place product on truck and/or customer shelves.

 

2.         Mental and visual ability to identify numerous varieties of product, prices, codes, and money denominations.  Color code identification is essential.  Visual requirements as normally required of vehicle drivers.  Must be able to do basic math calculations to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide.  Perception required to place, arrange and stock product displays and drive in close quarters.

 

3.            Capable to move in and out of a delivery truck and push and/or pull products in trays on dollies weighing 18-20 pounds and stacked 7 feet high on docks, ramps, and store aisleways.  Physical activities required are sitting while driving, standing, walking, squatting, climbing, reaching, twisting, bending, lifting, carrying, grasping and fingering to

3.         write or key orders.  Ability to hear, understand and speak English as necessary for safe driving and customer communication.

 

4.         Capable to understand simple instructions and read manuals, sales literature, vehicle instruction panel, notices and work schedules as posted on Bulletin Board. 

 

5.         Memory skills for recall of product price, product traits, code, availability and order deadlines.

 

6.         Worker subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions with extreme temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour and extreme heat.

 

7.         Worker subject to driving hazards of early morning fog, darkness and slick roads.

 

III.        Essential Tasks:

 

1.         Must be capable of performing all duties required of a Route Salesperson and run a route daily to provide customer service.  A valid state of residence drivers license and a safe driving record is required.

 

2.         Assume complete responsibility for obtaining profitable sales in the assigned area as established by the Sales Manager.  Establish with each customer the specific desires for their business.

 

3.         Maintain by personal contact, a positive working relationship with all key accounts.  Responsible for individual contact as assigned by the Sales Manager.  Keep management informed of organizational changes that occur with key customers.

 

4.           Keep an updated route book in good, orderly condition, also for Wednesday and Sunday relief.

 

5.            Check the load of the particular route and make sure the load matches the specific requirements of the load sheet.  Load the route truck in an organized and safe manner.

6.         Properly account for all money due on weekly and cash accounts.  Make daily and weekly cash collections of delinquent accounts.

 

7.         Accurately collect and keep track of all stale products on the route.

 

 

IV.       Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

 

1.         Preparation and Training

 

Work requires a high school level of knowledge of several subjects in order to perform calculations, prepare reports, keep records and/or deal effectively with other people.

 

2.         Work Experience

 

Ability to work independently without close supervision is required.  Prior experience in route delivery is helpful.  Must be able to adapt to early morning work and long hours.

 

3.         Analytical Ability

 

A relative high level of analytical ability is required in order to find solutions to difficult human, administrative and competitive market conditions.

 

4.         Independent Judgment And Consequences Of Errors

 

Independent judgment is often required in safe driving.  Some direct guidance is received from Sales Manager and/or from established procedures and instructions but many independent decisions are made regarding service methods and order quantities to meet market conditions.  The consequence of errors is significant in cost of time, customer service, product appearance and customer/consumer relations.

Must have the ability to communicate with owners/managers and supervisors in grocery stores, restaurants and institutions.  Frequent  contact with other employees during loading and check out.

V.        Ongoing Requirements And Standards:

 

1.         A quality product is the responsibility of each employee.  Be alert to handle or report any damaged or inferior product to supervision.

 

2.         Keep area of assigned work neat and clean.  Assist other employees when possible.

 

3          Notify garage, maintenance and/or upper management of any safety or equipment problems that need correcting.

 

4.         Maintain a high state of safety awareness.

a.         Keep hands out of moving machinery.

b.         Lift properly.

c.         Be alert to movement of vehicles, materials or other people  to give right of way as needed.

 

5.         Do not change established policy and procedures without authorization from upper management.

 

6.         Perform all other related assignments and training of other employees as required by upper management.
