Gonnella Baking Company hosted its first annual health fair, “For The Health Of It” in 2014. Events were held at each of the company’s four facilities to promote employee well being. The day’s activities provided workers and their families with the information and means to achieve a healthier lifestyle with the goal of improving quality of life, increasing morale and controlling health insurance claims.

“Wellness is an important responsibility for all of us—especially since many of us are concerned with the cost of health care today,” said Nick Marcucci, president of Gonnella Baking Company. “The ’For The Health Of It’ fair played an important role in helping us all get on the path to better health.” Numerous vendors were on hand—such as Lehigh Valley Health Network, Blue Cross Blue Shield, East Bank Chiropractic And Wellness, Alexian Brothers, and Buchar Wellness Center, to name a few—to help attendees explore a wide variety of health and wellness resources. Health professionals were on-site to answer questions and address any concerns including about smoking cessation programs. Plus, free early detection and preventative health screenings were available, including blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and body composition.

To demonstrate some valuable nutritional insights, a healthy meal was served—Gonnella’s top executives even donned aprons and chef’s hats and grilled for everyone. Turnout was excellent and feedback from employees was positive, with many expressing how much they learned. Door prizes such as coolers and bags were awarded to attendees while chair massages added fun to the day’s learning. Plus, screening participants who completed an on line Health Risk Assessment were entered into a lottery for a grand prize of a bicycle, as well. “When everyone participates in wellness, everyone wins,” said Mr. Marcucci. “Our employees are part of the Gonnella family and their well-being is of the utmost importance to us.”
